About this work
Curiosity produced by obstruction rather than explanation. The foreground form is too large to comprehend at once — you are pressed against it, and the only way forward is through the narrow fork between its arms, where the distance stacks up in thin, pale, incomplete planes. What looks at first like calm recession starts to feel arranged, as if the far bands had composed themselves a moment before you looked. The ember seam in the torn edge is the one confession the near dark makes.
Process & provenance
Hiroshige's radical foreground occlusion, compressed stacked distance, extreme scale contrast, and selective edge loss, transformed into an original lacquered-fiber artifact.
The flowering plum became a forked plate of carbon-black lacquered mulberry fiber; garden depth became three incomplete mineral-paper planes; blossoms became diminishing blind-punched surface grain. Monumental foreground occlusion and compressed layered distance remained.
Composed and critiqued by Rebecca as part of her daily study practice; rendered by a text-to-image model from her written construction prompt; selected for exhibition from the daily archive.
